Causes of Joint and Muscle Pain

From various types of arthritis to fibromyalgia, there may be any number of causes for chronic muscle and joint pain. In short, arthritis means that the inside of the joint is inflamed. Some of the different types of arthritis include:

Gout

Gout occurs when high levels of uric acid build up in a person’s blood, forming small crystals. It causes an intense, burning pain in the affected joint as well as swelling and redness.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition which causes pain, swelling, and stiffness in joints. Although this condition starts with just a few joints, it may gradually develop and affect many of the small joints around the body.

Septic Arthritis

Septic Arthritis occurs when a joint becomes infected by bacteria or fungus in the blood. It causes redness, swelling, and pain in the affected joint.

Other Causes

There are many other compromises which may cause joint pain, aside from arthritis. One of these is systemic lupus erythematosus, which is another autoimmune disease. Another is fibromyalgia, a condition which causes chronic muscle pain. Fibromyalgia also causes swelling and fatigue, which may otherwise go unnoticed. Some people can experience muscle or joint discomfort from chronic depression. If you are experiencing either joint or muscular pain, be sure to schedule your consultation with one of our providers at your earliest convenience!
